I liked shogi as a child, but found it to be too simple to be useful in real life: a mere 9 by 9 grid, no fog of war, no technology tree, no random map or spawn position, only 2 players, both sides exact same pieces, etc.

Tohotopia has had a pretty shockingly productive early access period. They added a 5th faction a bit ago, have a 6th dropping in less than a month, and just today added Mystia and Mamizou as part of a new neutral hero system where you can recruit them if you capture very specific cities

Oh yeah I've been playing Tohotopia recently, it's fun! It's a very simplified Civ but the heroes of each civ help give them distinct playstyles and identity
Playing against CPUs takes like 30 minutes to an hour but playing against people takes long as fuck, it took 4 hours but I had fun still lol

Tohotopia made me wonder if there was some sort of XCOM inspired Touhou fangame and as far as I can tell there isn't, that's crazy

Someone mentioned Tohotopia to me yesterday, but sadly I'm not a fan of 4X games. I have KD, and I have my eyes on shanghai.exe! Gonna check out BC2, USC and iwbtyyo though for sure!

Anyway point is I'd strongly recommend TOHOTOPIA. It's a very streamlined 4X game so even my dog brain could grasp it pretty well and I mean...look it's so cheap that I feel like if you have any interest at all you might as well.

TOHOTOPIA being so cheap meant I kinda half expected they'd keep it as having the content it does and just balance it and refine the overall package but they've now completely confirmed they're at least doubling the available factions from 4 to 8 with an additional 2 already being planned as dlc.
