Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams accused of rug pull as NYC Token crashes Shortly after losing his campaign for re-election as mayor of New York City, Eric Adams announced he would be launching "NYC Token". He's pitched the project as a fundraising tool to fight "antisemitism" and "anti-Americanism", and as a project to "teach our children how to embrace the blockchain technology." He launched the project on January 12, and buyers piled in in hopes of being early to a high-profile crypto token endorsed by a public figure. However, within hours, the team began pulling liquidity as the price peaked, extracting around $2.5 million. As the price began to fall, the team added back around $1.5 million, leaving around $1 million unaccounted for. Additionally, on-chain researchers observed at least one wallet that spent almost $750,000 to purchase around 1.5 million $NYC around 10 minutes before the token was publicly announced, leading to speculation around insider trading. However, because of the token price crash after the team began pulling liquidity, the apparent insider ultimately lost around $500,000. People were quick to accuse Adams, or his unidentified crypto team, of rug-pulling buyers. Adams and the project's social media account have claimed that the team was simply moving or "rebalanc[ing]" liquidity, though they have not yet offered any explanation as to where the missing $1 million went.

The employee took a large position in a token that he knew would be engaging in a "token generation event", then quickly sold off the tokens after the project announced the event. According to Binance, this allowed him to "realize significant profits". Binance announced that they had fired the employee, as "This behavior constitutes front-running based on non-public information obtained from his previous role and is a clear breach of company policy." The company became aware of the insider trading after they were alerted by outside parties who submitted tips to the company.

Update: World Liberty Financial token holders are now voting on whether to use transaction fees to buy more of the $WLFI token & burn it, reducing the supply.

$WLFI's drop on its first trading day bottomed out after it floated this proposal. I understand this is a common move for crypto protocols.

Victim impact statement: I got wrecked by buying a shitcoin($BOBA), which I highly suspect SBF(who clearly has connections in Stanford) is in cahoot with the team of BOBA token (CEO of enya labs who launched BOBA tokens are from stanford university, and many of the team's members are from Stanford) to pump and dump on the token which goes to $7.49 dollar to less than $0.12. The token is now trading around $0.5~$0.6. This amount of fall is clearly manipulated, in hindsight this is obviously price manipulation to extract money from retail. I lost $50k usd from their shenanigans. This money was supposed to be used for my further education. Now I have to start from the bottom again and I feel strongly that I should be compensated for the fraud and manipulation they pulled on retail users like me. I hope Justice prevails and laws should be used to uphold the integrity, stability and trust of society. Some white collar crimes are obvious, others are very good at hiding their maneuvers, lie with no conscience and covered their tracks carefully not to be caught, both types of criminals should belong in jail and kept away from the public or common people in general.

A web3 messaging project, Dechat, announced with some fanfare that the Dechat token would begin trading. In their social media post, however, they erroneously linked to the wrong token on the PancakeSwap cryptocurrency exchange. Instead of linking to the token they had developed, they included a link to a honeypot: that is, a malicious smart contract that aims to entice people to deposit funds that can then be stolen. "You clowns literally linked a honeypot for your own token launch," wrote crypto sleuth zachxbt. Some users replied that they had lost money to the erroneous link. Dechat quickly removed the post and created a new one with a corrected link. They also promised to reimburse users who had lost money to the honeypot.
