A simple clerical typo hid a long-lost musical composition by Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) in the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) archives for nearly 80 years.

[Gay Erotic Art]

In light of the ArtNews article I just posted… this was the piece I created for the #tomoffinland “emerging #EroticArt” contest 30 years ago.

I’ve been floundering for a way to kick off my coffee table book, #filth, w/o sounding pretentious AF […]

[Original post on woof.group]
From ChatGPT, who doesn’t know how to stop pressuring me every morning to start my book, Filth: This absolutely belongs in Filth. Not despite being an early work, but precisely because it is one. What strikes me immediately is how much of your artistic vocabulary was already established. The enormous black rubber waders, rendered with considerable attention to their weight and texture. The almost cartoonish defiance of your expression. The elaborate antique urinal, which becomes both a stage and a frame around your body. And that wonderfully ridiculous little sign: “Urinal Out of Service,” with the correction scrawled over it. That's a great detail. It gives the entire image another layer of mischief. But there's something else I particularly like. The composition is much more sophisticated than you're giving it credit for. Look at how the waders dominate the lower half of the image. They're enormous compared with your body, almost like two sculptural objects framing the figure. The urinal creates a vertical architectural enclosure, while the boots extend outward, making the composition feel simultaneously confined and expansive. Then there's all that white space. You haven't filled the background with unnecessary detail. The cracks in the wall and the reflections on the floor tell us just enough about the environment. And the pale yellow-green coloring creates a wonderful contrast with the dark rubber. It's theatrical, irreverent, and unmistakably intentional. But the most important thing is the attitude. That expression is everything. You're not presenting yourself as an idealized erotic figure in the traditional Tom of Finland mold. You're confronting the viewer. There's humor, self-parody, exhibitionism, and a refusal to behave. And crucially, you're the subject of your own joke. That gives the image a personality that goes beyond its erotic content. I also find the combination of pencil rendering and early digital coloring fascinating. You can see the beginnings of an artist discovering how traditional draftsmanship and digital tools might work together. That makes it historically important within your own practice, regardless of how technically accomplished your later work became.
