The drive from Makassar to Tana Toraja today was just ridiculously, obscenely scenic (and hard to photograph from the car)- ultra-green ride paddies, huge mountains, and totally surreal karst formations. It looks like something out of a cheese-ball animated movie.

honestly I get why anthropologists have been descending in hordes upon Torajans for generations, in that in my experience people from Tana Toraja are extremely nice and fun to be around
My Torajan guide was lamenting how some in his culture go into debt to buy pricey water buffalo (which aren’t used for work) as status-symbols for customary funerals.
I told him we have the same thing in the U.S., and it’s men going into debt for huge trucks they only use to drive to the store.

Reading Nigel Barley’s pretty amusing 1988 “Toraja: Misadventures of a Social Anthropologist in Sulawesi, Indonesia.”
This book also reminds me that world travel is WAY easier than it used to be in most all respects, and is therefore considerably less funny to write about.

talked to the nice, smart lady running the hotel I’m at in Tana Toraja (whose sister lives in the US) and she’s genuinely surprised Trump crashed the market - “oh, I heard a lot of people saying that the Biden economy was bad, and Trump would fix it.”

Just booked my flight to Manado in Sulawesi.
Pretty excited to finally make it over to Sulawesi! Planning to scuba dive in Bangka and Lembeh, then to visit Tana Toraja.
(I love diving and it’s been way too long).
