DEATH TO TRAFFICATION. DEATH TO HIGHWAYS. DEATH TO THE RIVERS OF ASPHALT AND CONCRETE THAT SCAR THE LAND.
Pumas are unlikely to recolonize much of their historical range in the eastern U.S., a new study finds.

It’s not a lack of habitat or food keeping out pumas, also known as cougars or mountain lions.

It’s the highways:

'Traffication' remains a book I'd recommend for any birder's library..

For today’s #LayoverLibrary, I’m reading ‘Traffication’, an analysis of the myriad ways in which cars destroy our natural environment through noise and air pollution, microplastic particles, and roadkill.

The most important thing you can do to reduce traffication? Drive less and drive slower.

Cars ruin cities in more ways than just running people over.

Paris has reduced air pollution by 50-55% over the past 20 years through policies limiting traffic and banning polluting vehicles.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

EPISODE 108: "Traffication with Paul Donald." Cars ruin more than cities — they ruin nature by fragmenting habitats and creating a barrage of threats to animals. What do cars and roads do to living things and what can be done? https://thewaroncars.org/2023/07/18/108-traffication-with-paul-donald/

Habitat fragmentation, caused by roads, is creating genetic problems too, due to lack of diversity in the gene pool

Traffication by Paul F Donald well worth a read on this subject

No one living has experienced an urban world not broken by the scream of cars. We’ve become numb, letting machines set a baseline of anxiety and dictate our environment. We may not make cars disappear, but shrinking their presence is essential for our mental health.

Vision Zero, but where we address the death and injury arising from motoring externalities as well as risky road layouts.

Geez, the research summarised in Traffication is insane! 😨 Thought I'd already opened my eyes to roads/cars impacts but... wow. Population & species community level impacts.

Yet more compelling reasons to do something. Reducing car use etc will benefit people and wildlife. #Booksky #WildlifeBook
Not really suitable for bedtime reading but continuing my nature & travel / transport #Booksky theme: Traffication! Well worth any naturalist, ecologist etc reading.

Movement and Roadkill also eye opening!

And here’s Dr Paul Donald, the author of Traffication (an excellent book on road ecology), talking about the harm vehicle noise does to wildlife.

Lots that can help reduce this impact (in particular, driving less) but easiest step = driving slower.

In this episode, Distillations spotlights a significant factor impacting our environment and the world's ecology: roads.

A book that really opened my eyes to how profoundly automobility destroys nature is "Traffication" by Paul F. Donald. Highly recommended.

have you heard of Paul Donald's Traffication? he talks about the detrimental effects of roads on the wildlife within 2-miles... aka, the entire country.

Primary source of microplastics is tyre dust from cars.
Microplastics in the bloodstream can induce cerebral thrombosis by causing cell obstruction and lead to neurobehavioral abnormalities

A report shines a light on the toxic cocktail of pollutants that runs off the UK’s road network and into our rivers and water sources every time it rains.

Fans of @bengoldfarb.bsky.social's Crossings may be familiar with some of the points raised in Donald's article but, whether you have heard about road ecology before or it is new to you, I urge you to give this a read. The article summarises his book 'Traffication' and is currently free to read
Dr Paul Donald, author and senior scientist at BirdLife International:
