Funny, or tragicomic?

One of the more tragicomic aspects of this cycle is the fact that Marshall is still clearly fuming and muttering "Those new mothers were deadbeats, goddamnit!"
What an unusual situation: the NYT reports Marshall filmed the ad personally against the advice of his campaign team. Then his staff still refused to air it, so he personally sent it around to media folks to share it: www.nytimes.com/2026/11/01/u...
To close his campaign, Roger Marshall is running a 60-second ad about a central theme of this campaign — how he treated patients.

“We had to keep the lights on, so we occasionally handed accounts over to collection agencies”, he explains.

The thing is, if you asked Shakespeare and Pratchett to write a parody of a bunch of upper-class second-son English twits forming a colony...

It could not come close to the tragicomic absurdity of the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Welcome to the singular world of Angus Wilson. An overlooked legend of the post-war queer landscape, he casts a waspish, tragicomic yet oddly tender eye across mid-century England.

Out now, with a foreword by Margaret Drabble

The LA-Transit-"Leadership"-Is-a-Tragicomic-Burlesque-Show story you needed this morning.
What's happening with the people mover is beyond anything I've ever experienced as a reporter.

Right now it feels like our own city spewed out White House press secretary-level propaganda one week out from Election Day to boost the prospects of a statistically unpopular incumbent
We have to talk about LAX's people mover
Plus: LA's garment industry rallies for more ethically produced local merch, and LA28's new slogan "Stars Align"

Such a tragicomic figure

It’s tragicomic to compare Australia’s campaign finance landscape (legally or factually) with the U.S. when pre-reform per-House-seat spending is on the order of less than AU$2 million—considerably less than 1/10th the per-seat spend vs. the U.S.

He ridiculed the French for their “monstrous, tragicomic scene” that could lead nowhere but to the political institution Burke reviled most: democracy.

His pamphlet serves as an early model of the bitterly partisan political writing in Britain and the U.S.

It would be my vote, for a lot of reasons.

It also remains tragicomic that huge chunks of a certain community flatly refuse to engage with talks like these, and will then eventually complain that their desires weren't fully considered.

Wicker is a wonderfully weird, ribald fairytale. Olivia Colman shines with tragicomic perfection and Alexander Skarsgård is surprisingly charming as her woven husband. Hilariously absurd yet unexpectedly sweet, it’s a uniquely charming, out-there satire.

It was so sweet; they really leaned into the friendship between the two & they had been alternating nights between Godot & the Pinter so really leaning into the comic of the tragicomic of it all as a relief those nights and the weight of their friendship on it was really beautiful.

There’s a rather middling article at Navy Times about Operation Magpie, a clumsy attempt by Nazi Germany to place two spies onto U.S. soil, and I gotta say, there’s a movie there, but it’s not the tense spy caper that Hollywood would demand.

More like a tragicomic moodfest.

20. BAD BLOOD: SECRETS AND LIES IN A SILICON VALLEY STARTUP by John Carreyrou

This was very good but weird to read years later now that its subject is a tragicomic pop culture figure, as it ends with this multiple-Pulitzer-winning journalist basically saying “Look, this person is a MONSTER.”
