genuinely think there should be some sort of rule whereby anyone moving to a place near an already existing pub/bar/club is not allowed to complain formally about it, you should have to prove that you were living there before the late night establishment opened if you want to whinge to the council

As someone who used to work in Birmingham, I think it's basically that the city centre does just feel a bit crap? Which comes from "wrong kind of urbanism" it's heavily divided by motorways and the different trainlines, nothing is easy to get to from anywhere else.
Was chatting about the relative invisibility of Birmingham compared to Manchester yesterday. Theories:
-Lack of top flight football and music scene
-Lack of defining visuals
-Made bad bet on wrong kind of urbanism
-Midlands identity just gets lost in north/south duality
-Relative economic decline

Meanwhile Scottish government has ensured the rebuilding and reinstatement of 2 trainlines - The Borders line and Stirling to Alloa - re-opened umpteen stations, electrified large parts of the central belt lines, oh and renationalised ScotRail and is removing ALL peak fares on ScotRail services.
