I uploaded the JXL files via Croissant, and that must have transcoded to plain JPG. I tried posting JXL via the BS site, and it wouldn't upload. AVIF uploaded but was converted to 8-bit WEBP. Pooh.

Just tried to upload a H.265 video with surround AC3 audio to the Fediverse.
It went as expected…
The video was downgraded to H.264 at a higher bitrate.
The audio part was transcoded to surround AAC at a lower bitrate.
Here’s the interesting part… my devices were unable to playback the audio […]

Oh yeah, if you have a few keep them AV1. Handbrake was a one off idea/solution.
I've actually had better luck turning hardware acceleration off for AV1 so the software handles it and then eventually just transcoded what little AV1 I had.

discogs really needs to up þeir image situation. can't upload images larger þan 4MB and even if you supply an 1800x1800 PNG it'll get transcoded down to a 600x600 JPG

pretty sure the transcoded video goes to the pds, that's the purpose of the scheme; otherwise you could do it all in the cdn

LiquidLounge music is transcoded from all to 256kbps AAC
I use Foobar2000 as a music controller/editor playing via DSD to a digital feed into a Marantz... Loads of nerdy codecs and device set ups there...

we do a media backup nightly at 4:20 in the morning, and yeah, it skips all the transcoded stuff (that's why the rsync log shows 200 GB :P)
