Transkribus in Practice: Abbreviations
In my last article, I wrote about my experiments to improve the accuracy of a Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) model using Transkribus. This is part of my ongoing work with the ERC-funded project…

There is no single best. My own preference is eScriptorium. Personally, the technique is not that hard to acquire. For a beginner, though, I'd point to Transkribus: it is easier to start with, and its cooperative model sits better with me than a purely commercial one.

2. Transkribus @transkribus.bsky.social

Probably the most accessible to begin with: a polished interface and a large catalogue of ready-made models. It is credit-based: a monthly free tier, then paid. It is strongest on European hands. One limit: models cannot leave its ecosystem.

The DO has more on Transkribus than any other tool, so for examples on non-Latin scripts and non-European languages: James Morris on Kirishitanban, Ephrem Ishac on the first public Syriac model, Rachael Griffiths on lowering error rates in Tibetan, and Tyler Kynn on teaching with it.

Gervigreindin les ekki staf fyrir staf heldur heil orð.

The recent @transkribus.bsky.social conference had a lot of examples on benchmarking criteria for humanities projects using various AIs/transkribus itself.

And that's me just finished recording a lecture related to this topic! And in a couple weeks they'll be testing & discussing Transkribus. Guess if I'm adding a link to this article to the reading list?! Perspective is needed.
Substack post by Ranke de Vries which not only shows that AI won't be taking over Medieval Irish Studies any time soon (thankfully), but also makes an eloquent case in favour of sitting with the difficulty of manuscript transcription.

Maybe I missed it, but what tool did you use? For reading handwriting it's better to use an AI tool specifically trained for that, like Transkribus, rather than a generic LLM.

Yesterday at the departmental back-to-school reception I was chatting with a postdoc about Transkribus who was excited to hear about something that was easy to use, and deployed technology in a helpful, supportive way without being weird, creepy, and pushy.

Nice to see the Winter School of HTR mentioned as one of the highlights of TUC26 and the Transkribus community in general! Super proud to be part of it since the very beginning! @digilab-imafo.bsky.social @transkribus.bsky.social
(also if someone has a better photo, do let me know 💙)

A big thanks to everyone who came out to my talk about my braille character recognition model at the @transkribus.bsky.social conference in Passau today! (And thanks to @melissaterras.bsky.social for the photo!)

Doing my Transkribus thing! I talked about how we came out of two research projects, acknowledging Valencia, Innsbruck, and the original team members; the importance of documenting what we are doing for transparency (still research for me!); and the support we now provide for academic research.

I'm teaching a Transkribus workshop in a couple of weeks - would love to cite your braille model if you have a link!

It is day one of the Transkribus User Conference in Passau! Looking forward to meeting some new people and learning more about this powerful ATR tool. If you're here in Passau, please come say hi! I'll be presenting a lightning talk about my braille model tomorrow.

Very excited to talk about my braille model at the Transkribus conference next week in Passau!
How do you train a model to read a script that almost no one is building tools for?

Six speakers share how they trained models for Braille, early modern Spanish calligraphy, Classical Nahuatl, Cyrillic-script Romanian registers, and endangered languages more broadly.

Join the session at #TUC26 🌏
Panel 1: Scripts of the World
All six talks show what happens when language or script sits outside the European mainstream — methodologically, linguistically, technically.

New online scholarly edition of Rıza Nur’s Ermeni Tarihi (1914–23), now on Transkribus: manuscript images + İA-based transcription, preserving revisions and planned illustrations. A critical source on nationalism and anti-Armenianism.
