In British India, English replaced Persian in the courts. Local people lost justice because they could not understand English. The British benefited because they now controlled how the law was read.

In parts of Africa under colonial rule, students were punished for speaking their mother tongue.

Colonizers would force their European languages and gain control while local communities lost the freedom to express their own culture and identities.

that just shows how translation can become a tool of domination when the language of power excludes the people being governed #hwa4 #translationasviolence

The Romans' translation was a tool of dominion that hurt both Greeks and Roman people. The Greeks had their culture stripped and altered. Even the Roman citizens lost, as the translation served to control them by enforcing laws and principles as those in power saw fit. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

which allowed powerful groups to influence people's beliefs. The people lost their freedom to understand texts in their own way, and religious authorities benefited by maintaining control. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

Translation has challenged power, for example, the Catholic Church kept control of religious information by fighting against English translations of the Bible. The Church's authority was kept safe, but access and freedom were taken away. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

#hwa4 #translationasviolence One way translation was violent was how settlers would translate and reflect the customs and codes of indigenous people. By belittling them, and translating them in a demeaning way emphasizes around being "primitive," it lead to their traditions being erased.

One example you mentioned was the intentional translation of Christian doctrines done by missionaries for indigenous people, as this was an attempt to "erase local spiritual systems." So in this historical example, the information lost would be the spiritual systems #hwa4 #translationasviolence

Indigenous people lost their identity and cultures and people in power largely benefited from this since they are obeying. Their “brainwash” succeeded with text justifying for them and making their action seems righteous since they are considered more civilized. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

When enslaved Africans’ languages and beliefs were translated by slave owners as “uncivilized” or wrong. That kind of translation made it easier to erase parts of their culture and force them to follow European language, religion, and customs. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

that the indigenous held and the benefit would be for the people implementing the translational changes. I think this is definitely a form of domination, by definition itself, as we now understand how translation was implemented as a tool for belief system change. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

I think it's interesting how translation can change the meaning of something completely. Even when the words sound similar, they can mean something totally different. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

One of the examples would be how historical text justify colonist actions. They would diminish indigenous people calling them superstitious and their arrival would serve as civilizing the locals. Indigenous people were forced to learn Bible and accept their cultures. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

The example of children being beaten for speaking their mother tongue in missionary schools shows how colonization caused the children to lose a part of their culture and identity. This then benefitted the colonizers by making their language and culture the dominant one. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

While translating the Bible into English, translation was violence-- this is because even when a simple word's meaning is changed, it changes the whole context of the phrase. For ex. Ashley shows "almah" vs "parthenos." Erasing meaning gave domination by language. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

#hwa4 #translationasviolence When translating from hebrew to greek, the word "young woman" was turned into "virgin." Not all young women are virgins and not all virgins are young women, but the translator decided to conflate the two, forcing a different connotation into the original passage. Now,

What was a prime example of violence in translation is the Greek translation of the hebrew word "almah" and the birth of the concept of the virgin birth in the Christian doctrine. The Greeks were able to then effectively boost their religious thoughts through this. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

During colonial times translation was used to erase the local languages. they used translation to hold power. Colonial administrators rewrote laws or hurt people for speaking their language (it happened in Poland when Germany/ Russia erased Poland in 18th century) #translationasviolence #hwa4

in colonial africa, it shows that students were beaten for speaking their native tongue in schools. Translation has the power to warp how reality is viewed and how it is defined for others, so those who create it are at a loss and those who change their reality benefit #hwa4 #translationasviolence

As I discussed previously a great example is the bible. The church did not allow the bible to be translated to the common tongue so average people could not make their own translation. They keep more power this way. The average person lost the ability to decide meaning. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

A historical example from part one, in which translation in colonial contexts was often described as a form of violence, was the translation from Hebrew to Greek. This emphasized how dangerous and powerful translation can be, shaping how the word was percievied. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

In the colonial era, Christian missionaries translated the bible into indigenous languages as a way of enforcing their beliefs on the people. It was not used to preserve language but rather to establish a new order and erase a civilization's history and culture. #hwa4 #translationasviolence
