It is easy to forget that Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, just eight years before it was nearly destroyed in its bloody siege. On Mount Trebević are the remains of the Olympic bobsleigh course. From here Serb forces shelled the city.

You can catch a cable car up Mount Trebević, from where there are great views of Sarajevo and many walking trails. The top cable car station is still in BiH Federation territory, but the actual summit, where the TV tower is, is in Republika Srpska.

We walked the entire length of Sarajevo’s abandoned Olympic bobsleigh and luge track, once covered in ice and later damaged during the siege. It is now an extraordinary mixture of sporting venue, war ruin and street-art gallery.
