I have spent quite a lot of my life researching parasites and ivermectin is a great anti-helmintic that can treat neglected tropical diseases like river-blindness and trichuris (whipworm) and is also used in veterinary medicine to manage worm conditions 🧪🧵

Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale
Necator americanus, Trichuris trichiura are species that can live inside your intestines and cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to rectal bleeding and appendicitis. Cute! 🥹
If it helps with your anxiety at all, four fifths of all animals are nematodes.

But instead, it was cut in small pieces & tied with leather cord.

See, Ötzi had a parasitic roundworm, Trichuris trichiura, the whipworm & this mushroom contains agaric acid capable of killing & expelling whipworm.

Ötzi also had Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), but mushrooms won't help there.

Is the ivermectin for Covid craze contributing to the growth of ivermectin-resistant parasites? Scientists say it’s possible but no firm evidence yet.
Never-before-seen parasite is resistant to ivermectin
Trichuris incognita is a newfound intestinal roundworm closely related to the whipworm parasite. However, it is significantly more resistant to treatment.

Widespread Trichuris incognita reveals hidden diversity and reshapes understanding of human whipworm infections - Nature Communications
Authors used nanopore-based ITS2 sequencing analysis to map the global distribution of human-infecting Trichuris spp. They reveal a wide presence of T. incognita, its zoonotic potential, and provide insights for better control of infections.

Optimized faecal miRNA sequencing reveals fibrosis in Trichuris muris infections! A breakthrough for non-invasive studies of intestinal health. #MicroRNAScience PMID:39939598, Nat Commun 2025, @NatureComms https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-025-56698-w #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA 🧪
An optimised faecal microRNA sequencing pipeline reveals fibrosis in Trichuris muris infection | Nature Communications
The intestine is a site of diverse functions including digestion, nutrient absorption, immune surveillance, and microbial symbiosis. Intestinal microRNAs (miRNAs) are detectable in faeces and regulate barrier integrity, host-microbe interactions and the immune response, potentially offering valuable non-invasive tools to study intestinal health. However, current experimental methods are suboptimal and heterogeneity in study design limits the utility of faecal miRNA data. Here, we develop an optimised protocol for faecal miRNA detection and report a reproducible murine faecal miRNA profile in healthy mice. We use this pipeline to study faecal miRNAs during infection with the gastrointestinal helminth, Trichuris muris, revealing roles for miRNAs in fibrosis and wound healing. Intestinal fibrosis was confirmed in vivo using Hyperion® imaging mass cytometry, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach. Further applications of this optimised pipeline to study host-microbe interactions and i
