Thanks, Michael Laws, for providing an example of every sexist trope you could throw at a woman leader in this country. Jfc where do I begin? #nzpol

There's this trope I call "midichlorian magic" where franchises, often prequels, try to explain things that don't need explaining (like "Wicked" explaining why the witch is green). I liked "Crystal Lake" but boy howdy it's one of the worst offenders

Reading Code and Codex by Yoon Ha Lee and omg winged cat meets lethal assassin is a trope I didn't know I needed in my life

Neoliberal trope scapegoating the poor, old, sick, disabled.

Silent on corporate welfare, Inequitable distribution of wealth,
Profiteering causing poverty,
Full state pension less than 50% of minimum wage.
People relying on benefits because work doesn't pay.
Tax abuse by corporations and rich.
Britain's welfare ratchet.

My column for @financialtimes.com. Political incentives, rising expectations on the state & deeper economic failings make the UK's benefits system hard to rein in.

What's a common storytelling trope pisses you off?

Mine is characters saying "there's no such thing as coincidences."

Yeah there fucking is. It's a big world out there.

there is nothing wrong with ao3 trope tagging style as a practice as its own beast but it has a very particular function and invites your work to be considered a specific way. id go so far as to say that if you are writing anything bordering on literary fiction, trope tagging is a disservice

My favorite trope of the year! 🥹

Ah yes, the longstanding "Republicans show up to vote after work, unlike those lazy mooching libs" trope.

Are all my reposts going to be of Veri and Sael? Probably not but I do love how their poses usually turn out… childhood friends to married couple trope is the best so what lol

it is antisemitic to describe reality as it currently exists if it even vaguely resembles a trope.
October 31, 2026 at 7:12 PM
How do you mess up the "explosion-crazed enthusiastic one" that's the easiest MOBA trope of all fucking time
November 2, 2026 at 3:04 PM
I feel like the whole "this person is some kind of sinister warlock because they can command crows" trope loses some of its impact once you understand how eager actual crows are to be somebody's minions.
