A great start to our Borneo trip at the Trusmadi Bird Hide, where this stunning Bornean Banded Pitta was the highlight! Bouncing around the arena!
Just a female Bulwer’s Pheasant made a visit to the hide, but since they have been AWOL for a while, we were happy to see her!

Researchers recorded 407 detections across Sabah's western highlands, confirming the species in Nuluhon-Trusmadi Forest Reserve for the first time.

The ferret badger is known only from the Kinabalu-Crocker-Trusmadi mountains, highlighting the importance of protecting unique highland ecosystems

Black-Throated Wren-Babbler is a rather uncommon and very cool bird to see.
Photographed from a hide on Mount Trusmadi.

jiminy's animal reviews: This is the tufted pygmy squirrel (𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪), a small rodent found exclusively in the forest of Borneo. It is one of the smallest squirrels in the world thanks to never having developed a neck. 🧵

Celebrate World Bee Day! From half-a-world-away, two carpenter #bees from #TrusMadi in #Sabah #Malaysia #Borneo. Both were photographed at a light trap at night. Blue carpenter bee, #Xylocopa tumida, and another carpenter bee, Xylocopa sp., perhaps X. myops (?). So Fuzzy!

A typical night at the entomology camp at Trusmadi, but with over 10 of these sheets positioned over ridges and mountainsides.
How does one even remember what's been photographed, especially when so many of them are moving?

Among Earth’s largest #moths. #Atlas moths, #Attacus atlas, Family #Saturniidae, may have wings spanning >9”. The wingtips look like #snakes ready to strike! The huge 1” diameter #caterpillars sport a waxy coating resembling (mimicking?) #Cordyceps infected larvae. #Borneo #TrusMadi #Sabah #Malaysia

Stick insect Island. #Borneo is home of 10% of Earth’s #StickInsect species; it’s the best place to see them. The green, purple & red of #Orthonecroscia keatsooni #Lonchodidae make it unforgettable. #Phasmids were readily found in the #rainforest at night w/ flashlights. #TrusMadi #Sabah #Malaysia

A pair of treehoppers tending to their eggs. The dorsal fin seems to be variable, as we've seen individuals nearby without any dorsal fin at all. Some also have a red longitudinal stripe on their wings.

“Go to bed Evolution, you’re drunk!” #Macrocilix maia is a #moth. Wing markings show #flies feeding on bird droppings – incredible #camouflage #mimicy. Another species is “working on” a similar convergent pattern. The best #insect mimic I’ve ever seen. #TrusMadi Entomology Camp #Malaysia #Borneo

These bees are really rare, there are only ten observations in the whole world on iNaturalist, all from around Trusmadi entomology camp in mountainous Sabah!

So lucky to have seen such a beautiful animal. 3/3

Like George in the program, I am certain we were looking at so many new species to science. The 10 traps set up on the ridgeline at Trusmadi entomology camp draw in huge numbers of moths from the jungle

But on Tim's face here is one I can identify, a beautiful hawkmoth called Ambulyx canescens 4/5

While Trusmadi is in Borneo and George was in Papua New Guinea, the moths he saw are so similar to the ones we saw! www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbwC...
