Omg, someone who understands!!!! I probably still know entire lines of text from those books. My god. The Christian allegory with Tryfan and Beechen was so strong, but wow did I love them.

One of my proudest climbing moments was climbing Tryfan Bach in Snowdonia. I did cry halfway up as one of the nuts got loose & I got scared but I did it! 😆😅

Cloud was down to 2,000 feet, and the route to the summit is notoriously dangerous in bad visibility
I felt I had to continue, & soon found myself following a line of small red flags

A friend and I had to walk four newbies off Tryfan north ridge after we finished Direct Route on Milestone Buttress a couple of years ago. They'd been up there for hours and just panicked every time the path got a bit indistinct. Tried to be reassuring and encouraging. But.

Like, Tryfan and Bristly Ridge is a serious scramble, particularly the latter. It's not just a playground to give it a go on.

Question is how we minimise risk and educate better: get people to try Moel Siabod before Tryfan, start off on Cats Bells not Striding Edge.

Poss, tho crib Goch, N ridge Tryfan are 'normal' in the sense that in good conditions hundreds of ppl will do them safely every day. The post about Cneifion gives the grade. My parents - def not climbers - did CG in their 60-70s. But they had hill (& common) sense. The problem is more fundamental

Don't know how much of it is the collapse in outdoor ed. following on from austerity? If you'd been to Ogwen Cottage as a kid you'd have seen that Tryfan was Proper Serious Stuff (also Scouts—as a leader far harder to take kids into the hills now).

I know less about Snowdonia than most parks. Since safely bringing a student group down off a totally rock frozen, horribly exposed Tryfan, 200’ from summit, into wrong valley for coach, pre mobiles, never been back …1986!

Tryfan is a joy. Had to back off Gashed Crag at the chimney - my second didn't fancy it but I was happy enough to ab down and traverse onto Grooved Arete. Just a great mountain however you go up.
