Yeah that's an interesting one. I almost forgot about that phase myself, but I remember because the Twitterbot community were very interested in curating nice datasets, and so for a while it overlapped with this era of data science you describe, too.

Just remembered that back in the day I had a Twitterbot that would trawl the #amwriting tag and if someone mentioned how many words they wrote the bot would respond with "That's cool, I wrote [a random number between 100-500 more words than their number]"

I dimly remember a twitterbot that every few hours randomly deleted a file from the computer on which it ran, how did that go
this is the defining belief behind DOGE

Didn't Microsoft have a twitterbot that did this very thing? At least theirs was due to asshole users and they killed it quickly

When we wrote the Twitterbot book they changed the length of tweets from 140 characters to 280 during the final phase of chapter edits and it triggered so many changes.
