It's decided that, since I installed from a .ISO file (easiest way to set up a VM, which I used without issues for Ubunto and Windows in the past), that that CDROM should be the *only* source of software updates, lol.
I CBA researching how to fix it. It's dead to me just by doing that by default.

1) open windows powershell (run as administrator)
2) type "wsl --install"
done ;)
By default you'll have a full, real Ubunto installation available via desktop icon. You can develop for X64 linux right from there (or snapdragon, now) or simply 'learn linux' using a real distribution. I love WSL

Yeah, I could probably take 20 knackered laptops, put cheap SSDs in and install free ubunto OS for the price of a low end MacBook...

Well, having looked into things a bit, it looks like SteamOS or Ubunto is the way to go. I need to finalise the details, but at least I don't have to buy a new machine, or worry about loosing the games I have.
I found myself looking in Raspberrys and Linux this evening. Support for Windows 10 ends next year, and my PC can't handle 11.
I'm not really a gamer any more, nor do I need one for business. So the options are new OS, or new box...

The moment I see any sort of "hey, I’m a new AI feature!" popping up on any program/OS/what-have-you, I’m off trying to figure out how to shut it the hell off.

In case it doesn't go without saying: I have not used gen AI to create text in any of my books. I have not used Grammarly etc to "clean up" the text. I have not used it to research any of my books, except where it might be built into search engines under the hood (I do not use labelled AI results).

To now hear it still needs "lots of care and feeding" is discouraging. Despite its flaws, Win works. Hours searching for one Linux driver is a pain.

Besides, the problem has already been solved. It it weren't for office, i'd have the Ubunto installed immediately.
Now with Proton, it's all doable.

Btw. meiner uralt Ölheizung bj02 hab ich es aus allen Richtungen besorgt🥳
Die hat ein serialinterface (1200 baut ) bekommen. Da hängt ein RaspberryPi dran, mit 15 x ds18b20.
Augenblicklich Reengenieren wir den internen Bus. Um ist Daten zu senden.

The only disadvantage of contemporary EV's is that they rely on the duopoly Google and Apple. Tesla uses Ubunto, yet Tesla's are out of the question.
