A 19-year-old UC Santa Cruz student, Alli Renee Singh, died following a fatal car accident that occurred when her vehicle drove off a cliff and into the ocean near Santa Cruz. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 12:50 a.m. on August 13 after reports of the crash on West Cliff Drive near Steamer Lane. One passenger managed to escape with minor injuries, while Singh was trapped inside the submerged car. Four ocean rescue swimmers retrieved her from the wreckage, but she succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital. The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns for coastal roads in Santa Cruz, which have faced damage from winter waves and erosion. Authorities noted that the section of West Cliff Drive where the crash occurred has been deteriorating due to environmental factors, prompting plans to relocate roadway infrastructure next year. Singh was a psychology major at UC Santa Cruz and part of the John R. Lewis College community focused on social justice. Her family requested privacy during this difficult time, emphasizing her vibrant personality and contributions to her community.
