#underregulated
Elon Musk having “a trillion dollars” doesn’t really mean anything except that the stock market is underregulated to such an extent that one morally insane capitalist can contaminate the entire global economy

Remember:

Data show the US isn't actually more litigious than any other country. Instead, we're underregulated relative to other countries, because corporations keep telling lawmakers that courts and lawsuits will do the job that regulations are supposed to do.

I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day

Wall Street is full of capital and Expected Value-maximizing.

But it’s also regulated, and well-established.

Poker, sports betting, and Silicon Valley VC culture are underregulated.

They all have a flair for the dramatic, the potential for big scores, and a general frontier/gold rush vibe.

Follow the money.

MAHA leaders rail against Big Pharma—then quietly build their own trillion-dollar “Big Wellness” empire fueled by excessive testing and underregulated supplements.

Same grift. Different label.

Here’s last night’s story about “gas station drugs” – the questionable supplements becoming a sprawling industry of underregulated, widely available, and potentially addicting substances. Just something to think about next time you’re buying a slurpee! https://youtu.be/mRZqHzDG_c8

Just to add to this excellent piece by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social, "AI as incipient godhead that can only be placated (perhaps) by the techpriests" and "AI as potentially dangerous, underregulated product with inadequate safety testing" lead you to very different policy responses.

When are we going to have a reckoning about the harm being caused by underregulated supplements?
my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

“If and when the F.D.A. removes formaldehyde from relaxers, that ban would not address the fact that the products most often used by Black women remain vastly underregulated and, until recently, insufficiently studied.”
“A study that followed a cohort of nearly 34,000 women, found that those who frequently used chemical hair-straightening products, a majority of whom were Black women, were two and a half times as likely to develop uterine cancer as those who did not use the products.”
