it was already absurd - hyperbolic, dematerialized, ahistorical, ivy-centric - at the time, and some of us doing real work like unionization and teaching in the vast unelite publics, said so, in print
I’m just gonna say it: I think there was a whole genre of academic pseudo-activism about how the university itself was conservative/colonial/needed to be abolished etc that was the political equivalent of ZIRP. Like it just feels absurd these days.
granted, i invented this person in my head, but im assuming people who were saying college is itself a corrupt institution filled with authoritarians yesterday are not going to be enthusiastically fighting for the life of the UC system

I think what’s interesting about social media is that it gives junior folks, and folks at "unelite" schools a much more even playing field, where many more folks might be paying attention to them rather than folks who are "fancy." And I think that causes a lot of unease among some law profs 1/2
Am I just old-fashioned in thinking that if you’re a senior prof who wants to discuss the choices a junior prof is making that the best way to handle that is privately, rather than posting through it? Looking around on here, it seems that maybe I am?
I mean, I was just drinking a beer in the sunshine, prepping for class as one does, and saw him saying that you were going to do illegal stuff. Seemed like a case of a very senior prof at a fancy school punching down on a junior prof at a non-elite state school (that I love). And I come back 1/2

I think the point was not to literally abolish Yale or other ivies, but to rethink the model of elite universities. This of course comes from someone who teaches at a decidedly unelite university.

But it *is* strange that what was an acceptable *taste* has changed in me. As unelite as I am, instant coffee is now "fine". Processed cheese is now "okay". Cheap beer is "good enough".
