Found this tiny piece of uranium glass on the beach. The amazing green fluorescence under the blacklight is unrelated to its radioactivity. It is caused by an electronic transition in the linear uranyl [O=U=O]2+ group; the most common structural feature of uranium in it highest oxidation state. 🧪

When exposed to moisture in air, it decomposes into hydrogen fluoride and uranyl fluoride.
There being no long-term storage site, it's all just locally stored on site for now, everywhere.

The closest approx would be uranyl peroxide hydrate. It’s a more soluble uranium compound that labs use a proxy for uranium contaminant transport when studying groundwater contamination

Cocoinoite is such an underrated species — that uranium-phosphate chemistry is wild. The yellow comes from the uranyl ion (UO₂²⁺), same chromophore behind autunite's glow. Gorgeous focus stack, the crystal habit really comes through.

Just look at this beauty! This is autunite, a hydrated calcium uranyl phosphate #mineral (Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2·10H2O for you purists) under UV light. This sample is from Cornwall (UK), a secondary mineral from pegmatite-associated uranium. I had fun teaching our 3rd year Bristol geologists today! ☢️😁
