#urushiol
except mango skins have urushiol which is also found in poison ivy, don't ask me how I know

any chemistry heads wanna speculate on whatever urushiol-like substance is in my gf's bedroom that keeps giving me (but never her) contact dermatitis?

prime suspect is the leather headboard she bought off etsy that came in from god knows where, or rather whatever was used to tan it

Pistachios contain urushiol which is the chemical that tells you to shut up

So... Urushiol spray on her lawn?

Cashews have something in them chemically related to urushiol, the stuff in poison ivy that causes the rash.

Roasting destroys most of it, so for pretty much everyone the amount is so low that it's not a concern.

But I'm apparently so sensitive to poison ivy that cashews now give me the rash.

We do know higher CO2 is great for poison ivy, and also increases the amount of urushiol in the plant.

Great for mosquitoes too!

A confusion worth clearing A rash from handling raw cashew shells or cashew nut shell liquid is a different thing from the food allergy.

Having done landscaping and tree work, kudzu is a monster, but like a benign smothering monster.
Not as bad a thorn vines or worse poison vines.
I was the one guy who preferred thorns over urushiol vines.

The horribly famous poison oak, Toxicodendron diversilobum, lounging lazily in the woods. With the colder evening temps its just now beginning to change to fall color. One brush against is and the oil, urushiol, clings to your skin triggering severe dermatitis.

Poison ivy's rashiness is likely due to our immune systems reacting to urushiol--a mixture of lipids transferred from the plant to our skin--not your typical protein trigger. Mitch Leslie explores these lesser known rxns this week @science.org

Little-known arm of immune system could be key to better vaccines, cancer therapies
The CD1 system responds to lipids, not proteins, driving reactions to bee stings, bacteria, and possibly poison ivy

Opposite friends. Mango skin has urushiol in it, which has the same effect as poison ivy. Thats the last thing yall want going on inside yall 😭 plus it wouldn’t burn evenly

CD1 proteins on so-called antigen-presenting cells display lipids from pathogens to T cells to drive protective immune responses, but they also trigger skin inflammation in response to some lipids.

Ever spotted poison ivy and thought, “I should pick that”?

TENN has 93 specimens collected by botanists who did! Urushiol can persist long after a plant is dried, and dermatitis has even been reported from herbarium specimens more than 100 years old.

I'm sorry I didn't realize you were still suffering from this. Also, your bedding and other stuff you might have touched you could have transferred Urushiol and you should probably wash it. I think in hot. Look up instructions, cuz it does transfer back and forth from clothing and stuff.

Goodnight from Urushiol, a minor demon of nasty skin rashes, wondering why she's been summoned to a rural bingo hall, but taking advantage of the crowd to start a progressively aggressive groinal itch amongst the pensioners.

#TheLiteraryGarden #PoisonIvy is native to eastern Asia and North America, is a member of the cashew and pistachio family (not an ivy!). For people who are allergic to the species Toxicodendron radicans, they are reacting to the urushiol oil in the plant. Pix: @mobotgarden.bsky.social Herbarium

I’ve got 3 for this! (For now heheh)

Urushiel was a D&D concept born of the same obsession pool as Eden (“omg Harrowhark Nonagesimus is Peak Female Character to me”), but she ended up almost nothing like her original concept or like Eden, other than having slightly more flexible morals lol

Deer visitors!

They've been coming almost every day to graze on, among other things, the poison ivy I had an encounter with and very nasty reaction to back in July. Seems they like to eat it and are naturally immune to the plant’s urushiol oil.

I sure found out for a couple of weeks that I wasn't!

A Black-capped Chickadee checking out the Poison Ivy bush. The berries are bad for humans (no surprise there) but are perfectly fine for birds. Birds' immune systems don't react to urushiol, the sap that triggers the allergic reaction in people.

Urushiol rashes have many different forms and modes. (Poison OAK regular, here.)

Antihistamine cream is the only way. None of these other remedies can deal with the menace of urushiol.

No no, i was asking if it was fire time
I wasn’t telling.

Mostly because i am wondering if that’s the most definitive way to get rid of the poison ivy

Also does urushiol get uptaken in smoke?
