In a show of I don't know if strength or recklessness, the US stock markets are solidly green, while the long bonds yields keep shattering records, and probably the sleep of many a pension fund and small bank managers. I have the feeling that this period will be studied in the future in Econ 101.

Another bribe filled with lies from Donald Trump and his family. They treat the US Treasury like their personal bank account.
Relative got a $500 check from US Treasury and a shocking letter full of lies signed by Trump and ending with "May God bless you". Basically a pre-electoral bribe. News reports say they're sending almost a million of these. Full text in alt below. (I told him to cash it quick before it bounces.)

One thing you can do if you have a check you're not sure about is take it to the bank that holds the account and present it to a teller. Sometimes the teller will give you cash then and there! I'm curious what bank the US Govt writes checks from.

My bank says I'm scheduled to receive $90 from the US Treasury on Wednesday. I'm not holding my breath, but if it happens, I still won't be voting for any Repubs and a couple of Dem candidates will be receiving unexpected campaign contributions.

Almost every screen you read has a hidden search box for the page you're on. Where it is in your browser, in a PDF, in Word, on both phones, and the one program where the shortcut forwards your email instead.
Press Ctrl+F. It finds your name on any page.
A 40-page benefits PDF arrives and you need the one line with your deductible on it. A 12-screen email from the insurance company has the claim number somewhere in the middle. The bank statement is a PDF and you're looking for a single charge. Most of us scroll. Some of us print it and use a finger. Nearly every program has a search box for the page you're on. On a Windows PC you open it by holding Ctrl and pressing F. On a Mac it's Command and F. Type a word, and the program jumps to it and marks every other place it appears. Chrome highlights the matches in yellow and puts yellow ticks in the scrollbar so you can see where the rest are. This one is a skill. Nothing to turn on. Once you know it's there, you stop reading for the word and start jumping to it. ## In your browser and in a PDF Ctrl+F works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on any web page. Ctrl+G moves to the next match and Ctrl+Shift+G to the previous one, or use the arrows on the little bar that opens. On a Mac, Safari included, it's Command+F, then Command+G and Shift+Command+G. PDFs work the same way. If the PDF opened in your browser, it's the same Ctrl+F. In Adobe's Acrobat Reader, right-click the document and choose Find, then type in the box at the top right. Paid Acrobat takes Ctrl+F directly and suggests matching words with a count of how often each appears. If you'd rather use the mouse, right-click the document and choose 'Find'. One catch. A scanned PDF is a photograph of text. Adobe describes text recognition as examining "a pixel-based picture of text," and until something has run it on the file, there's nothing for Find to find. If Ctrl+F comes up empty on a scan somebody emailed you, the PDF is the problem. ## In Word and Excel In Word, Ctrl+F opens a panel on the left called the Navigation pane, and you type into the box at the top. Every hit shows up as a snippet you can click. If you remember the old Find window, that's Ctrl+H, which Microsoft calls the Replace dialog box. The Find tab sits in the same window. In Excel, Ctrl+F opens a small Find and Replace window. 'Find Next' walks you through one cell at a time and 'Find All' lists every hit. Open 'Options' and set 'Within' to 'Workbook' to search every tab instead of one sheet. ## In your email, with one famous exception In Gmail on the web, the browser's Ctrl+F searches the open message. The search box at the top is for your whole mailbox, which is a different job. Outlook on Windows is the exception. Press Ctrl+F in Outlook and a Forward window opens. That's been true since 1995, when a beta tester asked Microsoft to make Ctrl+F match the email program he'd used before. Microsoft's own engineering blog names the beta tester. It was Bill Gates. In classic Outlook the find key is F4, on the Format Text tab. Microsoft documents it for a message you're writing, so open a message you've received in its own window first. In the new Outlook, Microsoft documents no find inside a message at all. Outlook on a Mac behaves normally, and Command+F finds. ## On your phone **iPhone.** In Safari, tap the share button and choose 'Find on Page', type the word, and use the arrow to jump between matches. Chrome on iPhone puts it under the three-dot menu as 'Find in Page'. In the Notes app, it's the three dots, then 'Find in Note'. **Android.** In Chrome, tap the three dots at the top right, then 'Find in page'. The same menu works inside a PDF opened in Chrome on Android 12 or newer. In the Google Docs app it's the three dots, then 'Find and replace'. In Adobe's Reader app, 'Search' is in the top menu. Phone-wide search is a different box, and also handy. On an iPhone, swipe down from the middle of the home screen. On a Pixel, swipe up from the home screen and a search bar appears that finds apps, contacts, and settings. ## Try it on something long Open the longest PDF in your Downloads folder. Press Ctrl+F, type your last name, and watch the page jump. That's the whole trick, and it works the same tomorrow in a lease, a manual, or a 60-page terms-of-service you'd never read on purpose. Which document sent you looking for this? I have a feeling it's a benefits PDF more often than anything else. joel@freshfromcache.com **Sources** Google, Chrome Help, "Search within a webpage" (Computer, Android, and iPhone tabs): Ctrl+f / Command+f, "Matches are highlighted in yellow. Is Servus Alberta using a US call centre to help manage (one more) horrible computer update?
I chose to bank at a #CreditUnion. I regret the decision to fold #ConnectFirst to whatever #Servus is trying to be.

I see these every day and I feel awful I can't give either. We barely scrape by day to day. We usually go into the next week with a deficit in the bank.

In no way does this compare to what is happening in Gaza of course. But it's rough here in the US, too. It's just more insidious.
