A teardown of the 2013 ecoMAX 800 coal-boiler controller display reveals a compact operator panel built around an Atmel ATxmega128A1U microcontroller.
The display board combines a PCF8563 real-time clock and SP485EE RS485/RS422 transceiver, showing that its D+ and D− terminals carry RS485 rather than USB.
The ATxmega128A1U runs at up to 32 MHz and provides 128 kB Flash, 8 kB SRAM, 2 kB EEPROM, USB-capable peripherals, and USART/SPI/I²C interfaces.
UART-to-RS485 routing uses USARTF1 pins PF6/PF7, while PF5 jointly controls the SP485EE receiver-enable and driver-enable lines.
The panel uses a proprietary framed protocol rather than Modbus, and only the display unit was available, leaving the main boiler controller unexamined.
