Mixed gender events are common as hell in fencing, which is why this bullshit grandstanding is even more farcical than usual.
You can get USFA ratings for national ranking in mixed gender events, which isn’t new.

The 12th annual session of the USFA was held during May 1925 in New York City. During that session the USFA acquiesed to a number of the ASL's request including making that league a direct member of the USFA.

Back when I fenced, most non-USFA tournaments didn't even bother separating competitors by gender. There just wasn't much point. I lost more bouts to female competitors than I can remember.
