one reason not to be a utilitarian is that the best US president by far, from a utilitarian perspective, is George W. Bush

first they came for the trannies and i said "i'm a utilitarian, i'm doing harm reduction by keeping quiet and saying nothing"
I guess I am a bit of a utilitarian, trying to prevent as much harm as possible, even if that means some folks don’t get their needs met.

may the tribunals be swift and merciless, and the gallows efficient and utilitarian.
As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

On top of the ethical arguments, yes, there's a critical utilitarian one as well.
Since I haven’t seen anyone mention this: When the U.S. commits war crimes it puts our troops in danger also, as it gives a green light to other countries that they can do the same to us

I’m a longtermist utilitarian btw
the whole deal with "longermism" is not that its adherents think deeply about the future, it's that they concoct bizarre futurist scenarios that just happen to justify their profoundly sociopathic behavior in the present

it's just the laziest form of self-serving utilitarianism imaginable

This is an example of what I think Marcy is talking about when she says right-wingers treat language as utilitarian."

The game is to shame Democrats over ANYTHING, ALWAYS, even as you're defending a coverup of the most notorious child rape scheme of the century.

Sick to death of this utilitarian storytelling trend. Have shit in your novel that just adds flavour and depth to your world! Not every gun is a Chekov. You don't need to walk a reader down a straight narrative boulevard.
Say a locksmith comes to a character's house to open a locked door in your novel. Guess what? Unless that person figures into the novel later, or the interaction has some other meaning, just cut to the effin' door being open. No one gives a flying f*ck about the locksmith in this context.
