I think the way to understand Star Trek is that it was 60’s Utopianism and the way to understand TNG is that it came from the end of the Cold War, a time when it looked like that utopia could exist. Everything after that is people getting bored with utopia as the real world drifted from it.
the thing i come back to, over and over--which stuff like LOWER DECKS got, and so much other latter-day trek has forgotten--is that the whole idea of trek is that they exist in a genuinely horrifying universe, but *choose* to pursue peace and diplomacy anyways...
