Star Trek (original series through DS9) is honestly the one place in popular consciousness that the vision of liberalism as a -Utopian- ideal remains. And its enduring popularity should remind liberals of what we lost when we mostly abandoned even qualified utopian visions.

TOS and TNG are both utopian. Both acknowledge that it is sometimes necessary for hard men to do hard things in order to preserve the order, but those hard things are not the point.
