The unions representing support staff and technical professionals at the University of Vermont Medical Center have reached a tentative, two-year deal with the hospital, AFT-Vermont announced Tuesday.
Support staff, techs reach tentative deal with UVMMC
The announcement means Vermont’s largest hospital should avert a strike, which union members had authorized last week.

One good thing here is that the hospital food at UVMMC is better than most. Not always— I have eaten a lot of extremely overcooked chicken breast and fish fillets but today I had this: the best thing I’ve eaten since I got landed in this place almost 10 days ago.

The strike authorization vote does not by itself initiate a work stoppage, although it brings workers to the brink of one.

Thousands of healthcare workers cast ballots and 82% voted to strike to protect patient care. This would be the largest healthcare strike in Vermont history. #vthealth #vtpoli #vteconomy #vthospitals

Stand with healthcare workers – and the fight for Milk with Dignity!
In June, we shared the news that thousands of workers had begun to jointly bargain a new contract with the state’s largest employer, the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC). Among their contract articles is a proposal that UVMMC join the Milk with Dignity Program and buy its dairy products from farms that treat workers fairly. Over the past several months, farmworkers have joined with hospital workers in the fight for a fair contract. Migrant Justice leaders have spoken at press conferences, joined union members in marches and rallies, and presented on the Milk with Dignity Program at contract negotiation sessions. This inspirational, cross-sectoral worker solidarity has inspired other labor unions to consider similar Milk with Dignity demands and has generated positive press coverage. Last week, however, hospital executives presented a “last, best, and final” offer to workers that would worsen current safe staffing processes and job security protections – and that continues to leave Milk with Dignity out of the contract. Today, October 2nd, the 3,300 support staff and technical workers at the hospital announced that they have authorized a strike. Take a minute to send an email to hospital executives letting them know that you stand with healthcare workers! The partnership between farmworkers at Migrant Justice and the healthcare workers at UVMMC is one example of the creative approaches that we are taking to push for the expansion of Milk with Dignity. As we near the Program’s nine year anniversary tomorrow, farmworkers are more committed than ever to expand the transformational protections that only Milk with Dignity provides. By allying with labor unions to bargain with institutions like UVMMC, with consumers to pressure corporations like Hannaford Supermarket, and with emerging businesses like Vermont Way Foods to create new products, farmworkers are bringing about a new day for human rights in dairy. Tomorrow, 10/3 we are bringing that energy and commitment to the picket line. Join us on Saturday, 3-7pm to picket Hannaford for Milk with Dignity!

Maybe Dr. Leffler and the exec staff need to share the pain. Like, 10%-15% reduction in salary and no bonuses until things turn around.

I'm so sorry to hear of your struggles. When I moved to VT in 1989, my ex provided OT services to schools in Franklin and Addison Counties. She went as far north as Richford. That was the price of her choice not to be on staff at UVMMC. I wonder if such services exist now.

Ms. Schwenn mentioned that she is *highly* opposed to unions because of linked article mentioned summer 2018 UVMMC nurses' strike.

I started working in that hospital's lab in mid-November 2018.

I return to where I worked before helping Mom & stepdad Joe in VT on 7/27/26 - NW IN near Chicago. 🎉
