I learned to drive, period, in my family’s 1985 VW Vanagon. Sans power steering — you really had to give it all you got to make turns. My pops said if I learned to drive this car, I could drive anything, and goddammit, he was right. Today’s stick shifts feel practically automatic in comparison.

96 Subaru Outback and a temperamental 85 VW Vanagon whose clutch I burned out trying to get it rolling uphill (sorry parents).

Learned to drive in a '87 VW Vanagon Synchro...when it was about 10 years old. Very unforgiving clutch. I can drive anything.

VW Vanagon, with pop top single bed, hammock across the driver's and passenger's seats, built-in icebox with tap, and a double bed in the back that you could open, snap on a bug screen, and watch drive-in movies.

When this one crossed our path, we couldn’t resist. We decided it would be a 5-year plan and we maxxed it: Newfoundland, Gaspe, Cape Breton, PEI, and lots of Nova Scotia. Best car ever
