This photo captures the beautiful Van Duzen River Valley right along California State Route 36, near Golden Gate Drive in Carlotta. The Landscape Explained The dry, gravelly area winding through the center of the image is the wide gravel bar of the Van Duzen River. During late summer and autumn, the water level drops drastically, exposing large stretches of river rocks. The river itself sits just downstream from where Yager Creek flows into it. Surrounding the river is a thick forest dominated by a mix of coast redwoods, Douglas firs, and broad-leafed trees like bigleaf maples
