Absolutely. The brain-body-environment loop is fundamental to our being-in-the-world; have you come across neurophenomenology? doi.org/10.3389/fpsy...

“Lived experience is where we start from and where all must link back to, like a guiding thread” (Varela, 1996, p. 334).

This paper is a practical guide to neurophenomenology. Varela’s neurophenomenological research program (NRP) aspires to bridge the gap between, and integrate...

Yes, absolutely. Its still the fundamental premise of much of enactivism. Maturana and Varela applied autopoiesis just to the cell. Varela's concept of autonomy was his way of generalising beyond the cell what could be generalised of the idea of the recursive organisation.

If Varela was still alive today, do you think he'd still be rooting for autopoiesis - in the way he conceptualised it - given what we know (or think we know) today?

This is what I meant a while ago on how people want to perceive the idea of memory and storage.
However, the term storage had enough baggage that von Foerster, Maturana, and Varela did not like it.
Von Foerster challenged people to explain how you could "retrieve" what was stored.

These peturbations cause structural shifts, in the brain, we can think of these structural shifts as memories, just like Varela did. This means that we have a model of storage that is not conceptualised as a filing cabinet - I personally think it goes v nicely with schemata (contd.)

And here is Maturana and Varela in The Tree of Knowledge:

The principal idea can be traced back to something more fundamental: recursion, which was a topic von Foerster, Maturana, and then Varela, explored deeply.

The nervous system, as it has no direct access to anything outside it, is a recursive system. It only ever "speaks" to itself.
October 9, 2026 at 6:36 PM
The beginning of the work on the autonomy of the nervous system started with Maturana and Varela. It states that no information can enter the system, and, therefore, nothing can enter to be stored. These ideas originated in the 70s/80s in von Foerster's Biological Computer Lab

I have read, quite a lot of second order cybernetics, which was the foundation of enactivism, and then enactivism itself. So, works by von Foerster, Maturana, Varela, Thompson, and Di Paolo, plus so many more papers.

I refer to the nervous system because that's how they discuss it.

5/20 🔥 Donyell Malen leads the scoring race: 6 goals in 5 games for @ASRomaEN.

Chasing on 4: Lautaro, Thuram, Raimondo (@Frosinone1928) and Varela (@ACMonza).

Malen’s 30% shot conversion shows how clinical he has been.

with the brain very much part of the "brain-body-environment" loop (central to Varela, Thompson and Rosch's 1991 conceptualisation of enactive cognition) teaching from an enactivist perspective is indeed based on what's *stored* in the brain.

Day 1. The worst cover version you’ve ever heard

Worst? More like a guilty pleasure. First time hearing this was Frankfurt, 2014. I was obsessed after. Why? Fucked if I know.
