In all seriousness, though but did Rook imagine Varric, or was it Solas manipulating them? Varric said things to Rook that I don't think Rook would necessarily know.
I did the early game Varric chat in DA:TV again and there's two bits of dialogue that are so haunting now we know what happened to him.
One is where he talks in third person (because it's in Rook's head) and the other is confirming his own death (again, in Rook's head).

And of course, Varric. The main reason I love Dragon Age so much. Of course my heart broke at the end, but they gave us so much of him that allowed me to kind of rekindle my old head canons of Hawke x Varric. Hee hee.

I thiiiink its supposed to be Solas creating a vision of Varric to mess with Rook but narratively I kind of like the narrative that Rook can't handle the guilt and so makes up Varric in their mind and Solas preys off of that.

I'm thinking getting recruited by Varric was not necessarily a plan of the Executors but they have cut lines in the game talking about testing Rook, adjusting.

I would say for both franchises, unless someone puts their waifu/husbando as #1, Varric and Garrus are the undisputed GOATs.
Garrus even more than Varric because you can romance him while Varric has a canon love interest, that's the only reason he wins.

That's what I'm trying to look into. Is every Rook a potential agent, but the one we choose is just the one who gets recruited by Varric? We know Inky sets Varric on Solas' path, who isn't to say the Executors aren't watching Inky/Varric? Why wouldn't the Executors have multiple agents in the field?

After she disbands the Inquisition, Ilia feels like she doesn't really have a home anymore. She goes back to Ostwick, and that goes badly. She spends some time in Kirkwall with Varric, but it's not the place for her either. She and Thom decide to travel for a while until they figure it out 👇
