Yeah, I suspect something like VerifiedJournalist on Mastodon could be a useful way about this. Agreed though it's much harder to verify individuals.

If labellers can label accounts, who's to say one couldn't set up like VerifiedJournalist, with a centralised validation scheme, that could then attach "Journalist" or "Politician" or whatever labels to accounts, which AppViews (i.e., the frontend) could then choose to show or not? I can see it. 2/2

That's quite close to how VerifiedJournalist works, AFAICT! But it also raises questions about gatekeeping and how one defines journalism.
