If I may manifest for a moment: in the likely event that the VideoHound guidebooks are revived in some shape or form, I would be beyond thrilled to be involved.

So my dad did the database for the VideoHound Movie Guide which was a world of discovery. But on a more direct level, Paul Simon's GRACELAND.
Okay you guys, what’s the best book, movie, or TV show your dad introduced you to

hate to say it but Aster reading VideoHound...officially have to stan
Also I’m around the same age as Aster, and it’s mildly surreal to hear him talk about reading VideoHound books and being the only teen in his school who knew David Lynch because that was EXACTLY my experience getting into film as well.
Watching the Daniel Clowes/Ari Aster interview on the Criterion Channel. The first movie they talk about is LADY IN A CAGE, and I’m not sure how I never clocked this before bit it is SUCH a clear influence on both of them.

Probably won’t finish this til the end of the weekend because it was background at work but honestly for a film that earned one bone from the VideoHound Movie Guide this thing rips. Sometimes critics are just wrong smdh
May be the best single minute of any opening credits in film history

I had the idea for a Creature Features Guide or Leonard Maltin's or VideoHound based on @spookhouse.bsky.social's work and my own love of old video guides except they'd all be cursed films with, like, 1-200 word reviews. Could even rate on both quality AND danger.

46. Movie guide books (Maltin, Videohound, etc) remain unparalleled as ways to stumble across movies you’d never see otherwise. Every home should have at least a couple.

Honorable mention to my favorite genre from the index of the old VideoHound guides: Vincent Price pines away at his dead wife’s portrait

Because you don't pore over the Videohound Movie Guide as often as I do.

One of the things I learned from obsessively reading the VideoHound guide as a kid was how many 20-film series there are from the studio era that no one has intentionally watched in 75 years.
if you only watch hollywood blockbuster slop you lose touch with what authentic Cinema looks like

i own several of the annual VideoHound guides because i pored over the copy at the video-store i worked at in high school (‘99/‘00). spent so many of my shifts flipping through it — and the Leonard Maltin book — to try and discover “new” titles.

working at video stores in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, these VideoHound guides (along with the Leonard Maltin ones) were absolutely essential. i spent countless hours at the counter just poring over them.

i have to pick ‘em up whenever i see them in the wild.

You can’t say we don’t love a reference book!

As physical media lovers we also love reference guides from Leonard Maltin to Psychotronic to VideoHound to Creature Features.

With these who needs the internet?!

looked up the old VideoHound movie review book series and discovered they haven't been printed in years. I hate that. I checked those books out of the library for years, especially as a kid/teenager, looking for movies I should check out.

Added a tab that calculates the number of films for each year, alongside which year has the most movies and how many. Turns out the VideoHound guys were very fond of 1989.

You guys remember that brief shining moment when you could look up some obscure movie in the VideoHound Retriever & order the DVD from Netflix and you could watch any damn thing you wanted without having to sign up for data thieving service

The Super Inframan (Infra-Man)/ 中國超人 (1975) - *** There are two ways to approach Infra-Man (as it was called when first released in America). One is to regard it as utter schlock, only to be enjoyed ironically; take the VideoHound review, giving the film their lowest rating and saying "Outlandish dialogue (delivered straight) combines with horrible special effects and costumes to create what may well be one of the best camp classics to date." The other is to take…
