as far as i can tell it is mostly just a place for the bigwigs to sit on special occasions, and might do double duty as an observation platform for idk safety stuff. amtrak has a similar one

Put on the Tim Burton movie Dark Shadows, a movie set in 1972 in the opening scene there is a character getting off a clearly modern Amtrak Viewliner car in modern livery that definitely wasn't around in Amtrak's first year. Boy I sure hope Tim Burton got fired for that blunder!

Today in Disney history, 9/15/1958, The Disneyland Viewliner, a narrow gauge, miniature train running since June 1957, closes. Two trains traveled along a figure-eight track through parts of Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. The Disneyland Monorail System will take the place of Viewliner in June 1959.

because i'm a foamer i'll say that the car you are probably referring to is called a sightseer lounge and the viewliner is a different kind of sleeping car used mainly on the east coast

TRIP REPORT! Train 48 had its usual consist: two Diesel locomotives (I never got close enough to identify them, take away my foamer card), a Viewliner sleeper, a cafe car, then five Amfleet II coaches, a Viewliner II dining car, then two more Viewliner sleepers (both Viewliner Is)...
We boarded first LOL.

Very detailed tread about Tren Maya's new long-distance coaches, including sleeping accommodations (first new sleeper order in North America for a public operation since Amtrak's Viewliner IIs, although the order wasn't completed until 2021, but really the first modern format)
Yesterday, Tren Maya introduced its newest train, the Pa’tal, on a special run between Cancun and Mérida! 🚆 🇲🇽

Not sure when I became a person who has opinions about Amtrak Viewliner I vs II cars but I yam who I yam. Anyway I’m off, stay tuned to hear about cows as I spot them from the train window today, Amtrak wifi willing and the creek don’t rise.
