Incidentally, odds are that Lella Vignelli deserves credit for the work, too.

I wouldn't lean too hard on Massimo Vignelli's vision. The pylons are a powerful choice, but it's a severe system, and as a rule, if you can see a sign in a crowded station, it wasn't part of the original design. Also, Vignelli relied on crisply written text in a way the new system does not.

Massimo Vignelli is spinning in his grave.

(And also the abstracted eagle, which is great and which Vignelli hated because of course)

Retro ditty bag design makes me both happy and sad. Vignelli forever.

I am instead thinking of subway maps, which I have fixated on for a few weeks. I found a perfect upload of the 1979 New York subway map, which, while very busy, has a certain beauty and clarity that disappeared when it was digitized. I love the new map, which is clear and concise.

Massimo Vignelli springs to mind as an outspoken critic of desktop publishing but I think it was mostly designers who saw the "visual pollution"

“Almost all the creative people I've ever spoken to are insecure and afraid. The only two people I've ever interviewed that were like 'I'm just cool the way I am' were two people over 80: Milton Glaser and Massimo Vignelli.” — Debbie Millman

I think we all know they should be using the Massimo Vignelli map.
🌍 The U.N. voted 164-1 to encourage a shift away from the Mercator map toward the Equal Earth projection, which better reflects countries’ true size.

🇺🇸 The U.S. was the only country to vote against it, calling the measure an “ideological agenda.”

As someone who desperately wanted to do the same job as Saul Bass, Massimo Vignelli, Neville Brody, Paul Rand, Pater Saville, and Susan Kare, I don't love it, but every generation of design technology has made the discipline more accessible.

The designer for these was Massimo Vignelli, who also designed the iconic 1972 NY Transit map, as it happens.
