Giving these Dresden plates new life.
This has been a huge project. It took me longer to take apart the 90 year old quilt to save the Dresden plates than it would have to piece a top.
I love how it turned out.

I’ve been upcycling a giant hexi panel a clients great aunts started 50 years ago. Much of it was too frayed to patch so turning it into blocks with boarders made more sense.

Refurbishing 1940s Dresden plates. It was so destroyed and covered in mold.
I soaked the quilt for a week then cut the Dresden plates out replacing them with muslin.
I am so excited to finish piecing this and getting it on the long arm.

These are the unfinished fan blocks from an unfinished quilt we purchased for parts. They were pretty dirty and smelly, so this image shows them soaking in a warm tub of water w a mild cleanser to get them all bright and happy again. There are many different prints from around the 1960’s, flowers, stylized geometrics, plaid, solids, stripes, foulards, gingham… Cooking up a dye bath on the kitchen stove, this is a closeup of the black enamel pot. The solid color shirts are being dyed shades of yellow, but look quite orange at this stage in the process. A vintage quilt top from maybe the 1920’s? It’s in a tub of warm water and mild cleanser to freshen it up. There are cream, tan and red bits showing. The yellow dyed shirts from previous photo is shown here in the rinsing bath. The color is much more accurate now as a pale yellow. Because the shirts were originally slightly different colors to begin with the yellow is in a variety of shades.
