Most of the Ely violets have gone over, but the surprise one at the bottom of the garden is back again this year and looking lovely. Bit of a mix of Common and Early Dog? #VioletChallenge #WildflowerHour

A Dog Violet for the #VioletChallenge. There were lots in the woods at Ravensroost although many of them were a bit inaccessible with the ground so wet. #WildflowerHour

Sweet Violet, Viola odorata var imberbis (top) & V. odorata var dumetorum (bottom). Imberbis has a pinky/peachy coloured spur & no tufty bits towards the base of the lateral petals, whereas dumetorum has a violet spur & tufty bits ('scuse finger). #WildflowerHour #VioletChallenge

Less sure of this #VioletChallenge. Possibly Common Dog Violet based on sepal appendages, longer veining on lower petal but spur doesn’t look paler than petals & didn’t look for notch as didn’t have ID sheet with me! Feel more informed about what to look for now #wildflowerhour
