On a gloomy day, they glow: Unlabeled vireya, most likely Rhododendron laetum x javanicum. It flowers reliably in late winter and intermittently at other times of the year. 🌱 🌴

More obsessive geekery about vireya rhododendrons. 🌱 🌴
Red Prince?
This is Rhododendron ‘Red Prince’ (or maybe not), and it is one of the old Veitch vireya hybrids (or maybe not). I got it as an unrooted cutting off a large plant growing in an orchid n…

Rhododendron praetervisum x ‘Doctor Hermann Sleumer’. Easier to grow and flower than R. praetervisum itself.

Hermann Sleumer was a botanist who named hundreds of new vireya species in the 1950s and 1960s, helping to usher in the second great era of vireya hybridization (the first was Victorian). 🌴🌱

Winter flowers #7 - Vireya rhododendron 'Golden Charm' - subtropical rhododendrons which can flower intermittently any time because flowering is triggered by day length, not temperature.

First bloom of Rhododendron ‘Pennywhistle’ that I purchased last February. This miniature vireya is a primary hybrid, R. macgregoriae (New Guinea) crossed with R. bagobonum (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines). 🌴 🌱

Rhododendron ‘Pennywhistle’ flowering again, right on schedule. R. bagobonum seems to be very dominant in vireya hybrids, consistently producing small orange flowers with very heavy substance. 🌱 🌴

Meet this beauty at almost 2000 m asl in the top of volcano in Sumatra! I'm amazed by this Tropical Rhodendron section, Vireya. I have seen White, Orange, Super Red, and Super Yellow in the same location.

Rhododendron jasminiflorum subsp. jasminiflorum. Cultivated plant in my greenhouse, c. 2005. Native habitat is peninsular Malaysia. This was the first vireya species to flower in cultivation (England, 1849). 🌱🌴

Rhododendron ‘Aravir’.

Another vireya, this one is R. konori x (Pink Delight x jasminiflorum). Fragrance seems to be strongest at night, suggesting the parent species are moth-pollinated. 🌴 🌱

Rhododendron 'Birat Red' is a somewhat mysterious vireya collected more than 50 years ago in a remote region of Papua New Guinea by an Anglican missionary with a botany degree from Cambridge. No one seems to know if it is a natural hybrid or undescribed species. 🌱 🌴
