ILR is not automatic. For someone on a skilled worker visa they need to pay a £3,226 application fee, pass a Life in the UK test, have a letter from their employer saying they’ll continue to be employed at their current salary level and meet the current salary requirements for a work visa.

this is wildly grim — not least because there are no visa routes that allow people to claim asylum in the UK, so almost everyone “arrives irregularly”.
Home Secretary confirming refugees who go through the asylum system will start at a 20 year route to settlement - but with 10 more years if they arrived irregularly. So many, many refugees will face a 30 year wait for settlement, all while facing reviews every 2.5 years.

So, my friend got married last year and to bring her spouse over it costs:
£2k in visa fees, £2.5k in NHS surcharges, each of which only cover 2.5yrs so you have to pay both again to reach ILR, unless Shabana gets her way, when it will be 4 times.
That's £9k for 5yrs with your spouse.

My son’s partner came here as a student, paid for their student visa plus upfront NHS costs, followed by a grad visa plus upfront NHS costs, followed by a 5 year Global Talent Visa (promise of exceptional talent) plus upfront NHS costs totaling £14000. Do it the right way and get screwed over!
