I like to think that all pulp ape-men are the same species. Clark Ashton Smith's Voormis, Lovecraft's Gnophkehs, whatever Thak from that one Conan story was. And modern Sasquatch and Yeti are their surviving descendants.

More than Howard or Lovecraft, Smith naturally leaned into "fantasy racism" - that is, the creation of non-human or near-human species, which sometimes fill in as subjects of prejudice, as the Voormis in "The Testament of Athammaus."

Personally I identify them with Clark Ashton Smith's Voormis and Lovecraft's Gnoph-kehs, which I headcanon as the same species and an offshoot of Australopithecus.

That said, I do believe that HPL's Gnophkehs were the same species as Smith's Voormis, and in turn the ancestors of REH's "white apes" of Nordheim and modern Sasquatch and Yeti.
