Deep-ocean voyaging, celestial navigation — the Polynesians were masters at it. Infamously known for wayfinding, Polynesian people voyaged across the vast blue Pacific Ocean basin using the sun, stars, waves, and nature around them.

Driving across North America, you’ll occasionally see a meat-flecked animal pelt lying on the shoulder.

In the 1700s men voyaged the backwoods, disrupting ecosystems and indigenous lifeways, to feed a vast international fur trade. Pelts were literal currency; that’s how we got the word “bucks”

In 320 BC, the Greek navigator Pytheas of Massalia - modern-day Marseilles - described the celestial pole as being empty of stars.

(Fascinating chap, Pytheas! Absurdly well-voyaged. Discovered Britain for the Greeks! Go read up about him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pytheas)

This year new archaeological finds on Sulawesi for the first time established that human relatives were in the islands of Wallacea before one million years ago. I can't wait to find out more about what they may have been like.

Happy birthday to Ben Betts! As key video engineer on numerous Star Trek projects, Ben voyaged with us many times into the final frontier. Born on July 16, the date of Apollo 11's launch, Ben even brought me along a few years ago on the Netflix comedy, Space Force.

It's sort of funny that Columbus is such an untouchable right-wing saint when all the places he actually voyaged are now Spanish speaking Latin American countries
Mamdani is right; Columbus is bad and not worthy of being honored. And this is not a case of applying modern moral standards to earlier periods - lots of people during Columbus's time thought he was overly brutal, too!
