that encoding time problem is why webp and avif are probably going to stay in use for a long time. both of them are just basic containers for a single frame of vp8 and av1 video respectively, so you'd theoretically be able to do image encoding on a GPU for higher batch throughput

you can do that for av1 and vp9/vp8, and windows 11 supports them out of the box, but it’s kinda iffy and difficult to have everyone in the instance install something from the store and reduces the actual usability of those codecs

it does have shortcomings. VP8 compression looks like dogshit in a format that doesn’t use motion vectors.
you must use the lossless encode path, at which point it’s basically apng.

it's not, it's just google's attempt to muscle out jpeg xl by calling a single frame of VP8 video an image. it's a peice of shit that can't even handle more than 8 bit per channel making it useless for anything serious

trying to find an image/animation that looks really bad when quantized/dithered (e.g. converted to GIF), but is still mostly fine with lossy compression codecs (of note vp8, and specifically webp's usage of it)

Letzte Nacht fiel mir erst mal auf, dass VP8/VP9 mit Alpha-Kanal von FFMPEG im Default-Input anders angenommen werden als z.B. Quicktime Animation.
Jetzt darf ich nach einer Lösung suchen ohne dass ich als festgelegten Eingangscodec VP vorschreibe, aber auch kein Bock auf IF habe. fml🙄

a lot of video codecs are also used for images. AVIF is AV1, and WebP is VP8.
