On 21 July 2025, an extremely large rock avalanche occurred in the mountains in Wanrong Township in Hualien County, Taiwan. Initial measurements suggest that this ran out for about 6 kilometres.

An update on the 21 July 2025 rock avalanche in the Matia’an valley, in Wanrong township in eastern Taiwan - the lake grew considerably due to rainfall from Typhoon Podul last week, whilst the landslide itself has continued to evolve.
