From our 2019 issue “In Our Own Words: Writing from the Philippines,” poet Voltaire Oyzon interweaves sentiments of frustration and gratitude for never-ending rainfall in the wake of a typhoon. Read “Water,” translated from Waray by Merlie M. Alunan, here: wordswithoutborders.org/read/article...

Comparing this to the Malay.

Tagalog: Lamok
Cebuano: Lamok/Namok
Hiligaynon: Lamok/Namok/Hamlok
Bikol: Lamok/Namok
Ilocano: Lamok
Waray: Namok
Kapampangan: Amuk/Yamuk
Pangasinan: Agéyet
Chavacano: Lamuk/Mosquito

I was half-expecting Tagalog “manok” (chicken) to be a false friend in one of them.
Last night a mosquito bit me on my eyebrow, which is more annoying than it sounds. So here are the words for "mosquito" in some languages I like.

Chinese (Wenyan): 蚊
(pinyin: wén, Middle Chinese: mjun)

Malay: nyamuk
(from proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ñamuk)

Tupi: nhatiʻũ
(compare Guarani "ñati'ũ")

A fine-tune of Meta's MMS hitting 3 million Waray speakers is genuinely notable — coverage for a Philippine language pair that almost never gets a TTS release, hosted where the Ascend community actually looks. Fine-tunes of MMS are also a known-good path for low-resource speech, so the base is...

A sociolinguistics thesis by Al Nabhani even considers this an important isogloss separating sedentary Omani dialects (warā-y) from (Bedouin) Gulf dialects (warā-ya), apparently referring to speakers from the Emirates—in available information, Bedouins from Najd say "warā-y", not "warā-ya"!
