Fireplace from the Lister Ward at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, birthplace of antiseptic surgery! The wards were demolished c.1924 but the fireplace was saved & is now in our appropriately named Lister Room.

He may be better known as a pioneering surgeon but James Syme also had an excellent eye for Dutch tiles! Our fireplace tiles originally adorned the fireplace of Syme's consulting room in his Minto House surgical hospital in Edinburgh, which he opened in 1829 #ArchiveAdventCalendar #WarmFire.

Where there is a #WarmFire there is often smoke. Judging by the smoke coming from these chimney's it was a chilly day. Lots of fires being lit.

A #WarmFire can be lovely in winter, but could be quite dangerous as well, especially in the days before there was an organised fire service. At least the people of Alfreton in 1908 were protected by these volunteer fire fighters and their dog.

The Fire window in the chapel of the Manchester Regiment. The cathedral was damaged by a bomb in 1940. The window, designed by Margaret Traherne, commemorates rebuilding after the blitz and was reconstructed after the 1996 bombing. #ArchiveAdventCalendar #WarmFire #StainedGlass

The wards in St Bartholomew's were kept warm with fire places, as you can see in this 1920s ward photo. Here are entries in the Governors minutes contracting Joseph Newland to provide 'old and small cole' to the hospital in the 1690s
