Stuff for drivers left on sidewalks for pedestrians is just another front in the #WarOnWalking.

Stop the WAR ON WALKING. #UrbanTruth #WarOnWalking
No matter what they claim, the REAL “war” that’s been going on in our cities has been a WAR ON WALKING.

Let's get #waronwalking the recognition it needs.
The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for.

Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it.

And bikes! And public transit!! And families!!! And KIDS!!!! #WarOnWalking #ActiveTransportation
For those in the UK and other countries where the lie is called a “war on motorists” rather than a “war on cars,” here’s a poster version for you to use and share.

Either way, never forget, if there’s REALLY been any war in cities, it’s been a century-long WAR ON WALKING.

So much of what DOESN'T WORK for so many cities starts right here #WarOnWalking
Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices?

The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.

A #WarOnWalking.

A war on biking.

A war on public transit.

A war on any transportation choice other than driving.

A war on better cities.

But a war on cars? Hardly. Cars still get most of the space, rights, budget, prioritization, etc.

And any effort to add more choice is immediately attacked.

To be clear, the #WARonWALKING is a big tent that includes the war on safe and efficient urban biking, on workable and well connected public transit, on all ages and abilities accessibility, and more.

It’s a war against better cities with more real options, and a war for car dependency. #UrbanTruth

If your elected municipal representative prioritizes making space for the “perceived convenience” of drivers behind the wheel of their cars, trucks or SUVs over the equity and safety of vulnerable road users; they are a active participant on the #WarOnWalking (which also includes rolling and riding)

If we’re going to talk about the #WARonWALKING (great framing), policy deserves way more attention: histories of anti-vagrancy laws; sundown-town ordinances; redlining & racialized zoning; loitering laws; exclusionary public-space bylaws; and curfews are powerful invisible weapons.

If we’re going to talk about the #WARonWALKING (great framing), social conditions deserve way more attention: inadequate street-level social supports; race-based police profiling; gender-based street harassment; social hostility & polarization; and lack of belonging & healthy spatial entitlement.

Okay, so if we’re talking about the #WaronWalking (great framing), the sidewalk deserves way more attention. A lack of connective sidewalk infrastructure, tree canopies, seating, public restrooms, lighting, pedestrian oriented wayfinding, and street-level retail & cultural hubs are major factors.

Road engineers and the politicians who approve their designs are the generals in the #WarOnWalking when they pretend pedestrians don't exist, and leave it to anyone crossing a road to have to take their chances when they want to go somewhere.

Birmingham, UK, has many such generals.

This was our very first poster release, 6 months ago or so.

Some people really want you to be angry about, or afraid of, having more things you want closer by.

They don’t want you to think very hard about how absolutely ridiculous that is.

Good cities provide more choices. #UrbanTruth
