I feel like claiming truth goes hand in hand with how you present reality, and this representation is actually how "truth" should be presented #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

a documentary that is only willing to "seduce" its viewers can be very dangerous because of how people perceive documentaries to be, which contain the spread of accurate information #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

When we talk about staging reality I think alignment with the truth and minimal exaggeration can be important. Consistency within the story makes it mucb easier for people to trust the documentarian. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

After watching all five videos, I don't think documentaries are just about showing the truth anymore. They're also about how someone chooses to present that truth. The sounds, images, and editing can completely change how we understand something. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Before all this I thought a documentary was basically just real ppl and real events being shown to us. Now I feel like its less about “showing reality” and more about how someone chooses to shape reality for us. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

but with Mothlight it was just very all over the place. I wasn’t able to focus..

after watching all these docs, i think claiming to tell the truth comes with a responsibility. filmmakers decide what we see and how we interpret it, so those choices can affect what we believe about real people and the world #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Post-Short Doc Watch Party
I feel like now a documentary just captures reality in a lens, sometimes bending it into a frame depending on how the director takes it but also it adds in a sort of subjective reality through the maker's filming choices. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Watching 160 Characters and Beyond This Place made me realize how personal documentaries can be. They use real experiences, but the way the stories are edited makes them more emotional. I think filmmakers have to be careful about how they represent other people's lives. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Before watching these videos, I thought documentaries were mostly supposed to give us facts and teach us about real events. Now I realize they can do a lot more than that. They can make us feel things and see situations differently without explaining everything. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

just like with the non-fiction genre, documentaries promise people reality, and that is when it begins to get dangerous #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

when you stage reality, you hold the responsibility of how people interpret this information and what they do with it #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Mothlight really changed how I think about documentaries because it didn't have a normal story or even any sound. It made me realize that a film doesn't always have to explain something to have meaning. Sometimes just the images and the feelings they create are enough. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Something that stood out to me is how much control the filmmaker has over what we believe. Even when a documentary uses real people and real experiences, the director still decides what we see and what gets left out. I never really thought about that before. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

#hwa5 #watchingdifferently is it crazy to say i dont think anything is documentary anymore i feel like everything i just watched was so different and im still reeling after the high of watching them all back to back, especially the nyt one. there is so much editing that went into everything, either

documentaries don't always need sound, it's the story they represent where you could still understand what message they are trying to convey. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

Having watching all those films have made me realize that film directors have so many ways of thinking how their viewers will have their own perspective of their own films, so it has made me think that in reality from how to make art that there are no rules at all.

I feel like I also questioned some of the sound affects used in a lot of the short docs some of them startled me

And that definition seems fitting. I think the term "documentary" need such a broad definition so it can fit all variations and all interpretations under that umbrella. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

I feel like the how to make an art short doc really made me question his perspective of art and his stamp of approval on certain art lol

It's crazy how much just sound, editing, and even silence can influence how and what we feel. Sometimes just as important as the content actually being shown.

#hwa5 #watchingdifferently feeling of doom and despair that this is what some people around me genuinely believe and they did not do anything about it, if anything it probably validates how they feel
October 19, 2026 at 3:31 AM
people can blindly believe whatever you present them, whether it be true or not, and it can alter the way they go about their lives and how they interact with others #hwa5 #watchingdifferently

I feel like the responsibilities that come with staging reality is creating something engaging, something that will keep your audience questioning you or making them feel different emotions (sad, angry, happy)

I feel like when a doc isn't only interested in informing viewers they create viewers that want to know more and viewers that start questioning about what really is going on
