After 7-year Community Battle, Dairyland Power Scraps Plans for New Gas Plant in Superior
SUPERIOR, Wis.—Dairyland Power has cancelled plans to build a large gas plant on the bluffs of the Nemadji River in Superior. The cancellation of the Nemadji Trail Energy Center is the culmination of more than seven years of tireless work to stop a project that would have released nearly 3 million tons of greenhouse gases and 200 tons of other dangerous pollutants every year. “Clean Wisconsin first intervened at the Public Service Commission to stop the plant in 2019 and the fight continued in court and city council chambers, before agencies, and in public conversation,” says Clean Wisconsin Director of Legal Advocacy Brett Korte. “We are grateful to all the partners including tribal advocates, other environmental organizations, and community members who never stopped fighting and believing that against all odds, this gas plant would be defeated.” The proposed 625-megawatt gas-burning power plant had faced years of public pushback from local residents, Dairyland Power customers, members of the Fond du Lac and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa, and environmental groups. On October 28, 2026, Dairyland announced the cancellation of the project and asked the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to withdraw its permits. “We applaud Dairyland Power Coop and South...

Finally. State adopts first ever groundwater safeguards for 'forever chemicals'
After nearly a decade of relentless advocacy from communities and environmental groups across the state, Wisconsin’s Natural Resources Board has voted unanimously to adopt the state’s first ever regulatory standards for toxic PFAS in groundwater. These safeguards are critical to protect tens of thousands of rural Wisconsinites who rely on private wells for their drinking water. While Wisconsin enacted PFAS protections for municipal drinking water and lakes and rivers more than four years ago, those safeguards did not apply to the 30 percent of Wisconsinites who use private wells. “Rural families, schools, daycares and businesses across Wisconsin that rely on private wells were left out of state PFAS protections until today,” says Clean Wisconsin Water and Agriculture Director Sara Walling. “We cannot have public health standards for some but not all. This was an issue of fairness. Establishing these groundwater standards closes that gap and ensures rural families are eligible for resources to help them access safe water.” Clean Wisconsin, along with Marinette-based advocacy group SOH2O and other community advocates, first began calling for PFAS groundwater standards in 2017, only to have Walker-era appointees on the Natural Resources Board abruptly vote down a proposed rule in 2022. The vote proved...

Ban toxic PFAS 'Forever Chemicals' in Wisconsin
Wisconsin must act to protect our water, soil and air by banning all non-essential uses of toxic PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ in our state. PFAS are a group of thousands of chemicals widely used in all kinds of consumer products including food packaging, non-stick cookware, water resistant clothing, stain-resistant furniture, carpets, pesticides, feminine products, and cosmetics. Known for resisting water, oil, and heat, these man-made substances are often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ because they don’t break down easily in the environment and can build up in our bodies. High-level exposure to PFAS has been linked to suppressed immune response, increased risk of cancer, decreased fertility, lower birth rates, and hormone disruption. $100 million dollars in annual healthcare costs in Wisconsin is linked to PFAS exposure. (Read the research) Sign the petition on the right to add your voice Those who sign this petition call on state lawmakers to protect public health by banning the manufacture and sale of products with nonessential PFAS in the state of Wisconsin...

Wisconsin's AI Data Centers Make History…
Host: Amy Barrilleaux Guests: Ciaran Gallagher, Clean Wisconsin Energy and Air Manager Resources for You: VIEW DEFENDER PODCAST PAGE Transcript: Amy Welcome to The Defender, Wisconsin’s environmental podcast. I’m your host, Amy Barrilleaux. The Defender is powered by Clean Wisconsin, your environmental voice since 1970. So it didn’t take long when Wisconsin’s first AI data center was announced just two and a half years ago. We heard promises and pledges from tech companies about sustainability, clean energy, climate responsibility. But before too long, that clean energy talk got quieter and quieter. Fast forward to today. And Wisconsin’s three AI data centers are poised to make history, but not in a good way. In two years, the state has seen seven new gas-burning power plants either built or in the pipeline for approval and construction. Never in the history of Wisconsin have we seen so much gas generation pushed to be built so quickly. And it’s because of just those three AI datacenters, the first phase of Microsoft and Mount Pleasant, the Oracle Open AI Datacenter in Port Washington, and the Metadata Center in Beaver Dam. Those three will use more energy than four million Wisconsin homes. And by the way,...
